Resources : Nebraska Lawyer Magazine : Author
Guidelines
The following guidelines are intended to assist authors in preparing
articles for publication in The Nebraska Lawyer.
Submission of Material
The Nebraska Lawyer Editorial Board encourages material for publication
from Nebraska practitioners. While the Editorial Board seeks out
particular authors for some of the magazine’s articles, unsolicited
manuscripts consistently form a large portion of our published copy
and are always welcome for consideration.
The Editorial Board strives to publish articles of interest to
the practicing bar, with a slant or focus pertaining specifically
to the law or lawyers of Nebraska. Of particular interest are articles
that detail recent changes or proposed changes in the law or that
stress practice aids. Please send photos, graphs and/or graphics
to be included with your article.
Length of Articles: Format
Articles that address substantive areas of the law should be between
2,800 and 4,000 words in length (11 to 16 double spaced pages).
News or human interest articles should be no longer than 2,000 words
(8 pages). Authors should use section headings, underscoring, and
highlighted text where appropriate. Authors’ suggestions for pictures,
illustrations, and other sidebar materials are greatly appreciated.
All manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced, on 8 1/2 x 11 inch
paper with one-inch margins. Single spaced manuscripts will be returned
to the author for reformatting.
The author’s name, address, phone number, and date of the manuscript
should appear at the top right-hand corner of the first page.
Query Letters
Authors are encouraged to explore possible editorial interest in
a subject before expending significant time and effort preparing
a complete article. Prospective authors are encouraged to contact
the Executive Editor (NSBA Director of Communications) or Issue
Editor to discuss article proposals.
Deadlines
The Nebraska Lawyer deadlines are firm. Production schedules
are inflexible and late manuscripts create particular havoc
for our publication schedule. Please send a hard copy along with
a 3.5" disk, preferably in a Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, ASCII,
or Text File. Articles that are not received on time for publication
in a particular issue will normally be forwarded to the next issue
editor for consideration. You may also e-mail your article to kbellman@nebar.com
Editorial Review
Article manuscripts should be submitted to the Executive Editor.
Copies will be forwarded to the issue editor and at least one assistant
issue editor for editorial review of readability and consistency
of style. A professional proofreader will be used to check grammar,
punctuation and citations. The AP Guidelines will be used as the
style manual. The issue editor has broad discretion in the editorial
process. Significant editorial changes will normally be cleared
with the author in advance. "Accepted" articles are not guaranteed
publication in any particular issue. Space and other limitations
occasionally require holding an article until a later issue.
Footnotes
Footnotes, if any, should be placed at the end of the article, not
on the same page as the text. Preferably, citations should be incorporated
in the body of the text.
Pictures and Biographies
Prospective authors should submit a recent photograph and a short
biographical sketch (40-60 words) to accompany the article. The
sketch should give the author’s collegiate and professional education,
place of current employment, and indication of any affiliation or
bias that may pertain to the content of the article.
Letters to the Editor
The Editorial Board is pleased to receive letters, particularly
in response to articles in The Nebraska Lawyer or to other
bar activities. If a letter is written in response to a published
article, the author of the article may be invited to respond in
the same or subsequent issue. Letters should not exceed 500 words;
publication is subject to editorial review and discretion.
Multiple Submissions and Reprints
The NSBA reserves the right to grant permission to reprint any article
or parts thereof appearing in The Nebraska Lawyer. The
Nebraska Lawyer will consider for publication previously published
articles.
Payment and Copyrights
Authors will receive no compensation for articles in The Nebraska
Lawyer. All published articles become the property of the NSBA.
The Nebraska Lawyer does not return manuscripts or disks.
Author’s Agreement
By submitting an article to The Nebraska Lawyer, the author
agrees to all the terms, provisions and policies of The Nebraska
Lawyer stated in these guidelines and the Editorial Policy.
