NEW SELF-HELP SECTION ON THE JUDICIAL BRANCH WEB SITE
In an effort to enhance the ability of courts to distribute information
to the public, the Supreme Court has designed a new section of the Judicial
Branch Web Site: On-Line
Self-Help.
Months and months of work by the Pro Se Committee, Technology Committee,
Information Management Services (the States computer department),
JUSTICE
(court computer system) staff, and others in the court system has resulted
in this self-help section.
All court forms and instructions necessary to complete a protection
order
or small claims case are linked directly to the section.
The small claims interactive program was funded through The States
County Automation Project. (The project is intended to demonstrate the
ability to develop web applications that could be used by citizens to
interact with the trial courts, and as a precursor to electronic filing.)
The protection order section was funded through a grant from the Nebraska
Crime Commission.

2004 ANNUAL MEETING KEYNOTE SPEAKER
The year 2004 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the U.S. Supreme court
decision in Brown v. Board of Education. The Nebraska State Bar
Association plans to commemorate that anniversary at our 2004 annual
meeting. The
NSBA is pleased to announce that Juan Williams will be the keynote
speaker at the General Session. Mr. Williams is the senior correspondent
for NPR and the political analyst for Fox Television. Mr. Williams has
also authored three books. His most recent is entitled: This Far
by Faith, and is the story of the African-American religious experience.
Previous books include the nonfiction bestseller, Eyes On The Prize,
and the critically acclaimed biography, Thurgood Marshall: American
Revolutionary. This book will be reissued in 2004 with a new epilogue
to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's historic Board
vs. Brown decision. Because of Williams' expertise, the President's
commission chose him as the keynote speaker at the Smithsonian Museum
in 2003 to commemorate the Brown anniversary.

PRACTICE TIP: RISK MANAGEMENT
Tips for Comparing Lawyers' Professional Liability Insurance
Not all Professional Liability coverage is identical. Significant
differences in coverage, restrictions or reporting requirements need
to be
considered as well as the bottom line price. When comparing coverages,
look at the following:
What is the definition of Professional Services? Does it include title
agent, notary or other ancillary services?
Who is covered by the insurance? Are Of Counsels, Independent
Contractors or employees covered?
What are my limits and deductible? Are claim expenses deducted from
my
limit or paid in addition to them? How does my deductible apply?
What is the long-term, financial stability of the insurance carrier?
Will it be solvent when you need to have a claim paid?
For more information on the only Lawyers' Professional Liability insurance
endorsed by the Nebraska State Bar, please contact Mary Whisenand at
1-800-435-7904.

PRACTICE TIP: BE ATTENTIVE
Develop your listening skills. Learn how to encourage your clients
to talk and how not to interrupt. Learn how to communicate attentiveness.
Use appropriate body language. Learn how to be still. Don't play with
paper clips. Don't gaze out the window. Don't allow interruptions. The
resulting benefits are numerous, but most of all, your clients will
thank you.

PRACTICE TIP: IT'S ALL IN THE INTRODUCTION
Learn how to meet and greet people and not turn them away by how
you introduce yourself. If you immediately say "I'm a labor lawyer,"
few people will ever think to themselves that they will need your services.
At that point you may have lost the opportunity to market yourself for
any other purpose. Create a five second introduction to repeat when
meeting new people (i.e. potential new clients). It should be natural
and informative, such as "I am a problem-solver for small businesses"
or "I help families plan for their financial future."
