THE NEBRASKA LAWYERS FOUNDATION
The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation is
a non-profit corporation who’s focus is to obtain grants,
gifts and contributions to fund the work of the Minority and Justice
Implementation Fund, the Nebraska Lawyers Assistance Fund, the One
Hour of Sharing campaign, the Volunteer Lawyers Fund, the Nebraska
Continuing Legal Education Fund and the New Initiatives Fund.
1. Why
was The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation created?
The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation
was created, at the request of the Nebraska State Bar Foundation,
to raise funds for the charitable, educational and research activities
of the Nebraska State Bar Association.
2. What
are the differences between the Nebraska Lawyers Foundation and the Nebraska State Bar Foundation?
The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation
is a non-profit corporation who’s focus is to obtain grants,
gifts and contributions to fund the work of the Minority and Justice
Implementation Fund, the Nebraska Lawyers Assistance Fund, the
One Hour of Sharing campaign, the Volunteer Lawyers Fund, the
Nebraska Continuing Legal Education Fund and the New Initiatives
Fund. The Nebraska State Bar Foundation serves the citizens of
Nebraska and the legal profession by funding and administering
law-related programs such as the High School Mock Trial Competition,
the Annual Law Day Essay Contest, the Age of Majority publication
and the job shadowing program.
3. What
is the mission of The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation?
The
mission of The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation is to serve the legal profession by securing contributions
to support programs dedicated to the improvement of the practice
of law and the administration of justice. The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation was created to secure
contributions for six current projects:
a.
Volunteer Lawyers Project
VLP funds a statewide volunteer legal services project and referral
network founded on the belief that all citizens should have
access to the legal system, regardless of ability to pay.
b.
One Hour of Sharing Campaign
The campaign is to raise cash contributions to support the provision
of civil legal services to low income Nebraskans. Contributions
may go to the Volunteer Lawyers Project, Nebraska Legal Services,
Nebraska Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest, the
Milton R. Abrahams Legal Clinic or the UNL Civil Law Clinic.
In addition to financial contributions, the annual campaign
is also being used to recruit volunteers to provide pro bono
assistance.(participation

The Nebraska Lawyers Assistance Program
NLAP offers help to lawyers, judges, and law students troubled
by substance abuse problems, stress, depression and other types
of disorders that may impair their ability to perform in a competent
and professional manner.
d.
The Minority and Justice Implementation Fund. MJTF was formed
in 1999 to study the state’s justice system and the legal
profession as they related to actual or perceived racial and
ethnic bias within the justice system and legal profession.
The Minority and Justice Implementation committee will implement
the findings of the 2002 MJTF report .which includes developing
and coordinating community outreach initiatives, devising methods
for the public to communicate to the committee their concerns
relating to perceived ethnic or racial bias within the judicial
system and coordinating court-and bar-sponsored programs to
make courts more user friendly to citizens from all cultures.

Nebraska Continuing Legal Education
The purpose of NCLE is to provide an educational program for
the study and discussion of information relating to the study
and practice of law.

New Initiative Fund
The new initiative fund will fund initiatives, projects, or
programs before a dedicated fund is established.
4. What
are the goals of The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation?
To
help the Nebraska lawyers by promoting integrity, competence and
legal excellence through financial support for NSBA charitable,
educational and research programs.
5. What
is the legal status of The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation?
A letter
from the IRS, dated August 7, 2003, notified us that us that “we
have determined that you are exempt from Federal income tax under
section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code as an organization
described in section 501(c).
6. “How
many of my bar dues dollars go to The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation?”
None
of your bar dues dollars are used.
7. “If
none of my bar dues dollars go to The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation, how is it financed?”
The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation
receives funding from three sources: 1) Voluntary contributions
from NSBA members, 2) Grants to support specific programs from
local, state and national foundations and 3) Contributions from
our corporate sponsors.
8. Who
are the officers of The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation?
The
voting members of the Nebraska State Bar Association Executive
Council are the board of directors of The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation. The Nebraska Lawyers Foundation
